History

Towill started as a small firm in San Francisco in 1955, when Roswell M. Towill opened a branch office of R. M. Towill Corporation of Hawaii. One of our first major aerial photography projects was to fly the entire shores of the San Francisco Bay for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to provide accurate aerial photography for the USACE Bay Model in Sausalito, CA.

Our geographical limit began to expand as we entered into rail transit surveys in the 1960s. Towill surveyed and mapped the entire BART system, including extensions that are just being undertaken in our present day. Towill’s success on BART opened the door to greater recognition and other transit agencies followed, hiring Towill across the country.

In 1968, Mr. Towill sold all his interest in the R. M. Towill Corporation and, together with a few key personnel, purchased the mainland operations from the parent company. Towill, Inc. has now grown from one office in San Francisco to seven locations throughout California and one in Colorado.

We have continually maintained our reputation for innovation and excellence in the geomatics profession and have grown into an industry leader with over 100 employees, offering our services throughout the U.S. and Pacific Rim.
